Three ways to
bind your paperback

Canon digital press printing paperback interiors
01

Perfect Binding

The most common paperback method. Pages are glued directly into the cover spine with a hot-melt adhesive. Clean, professional and cost-effective — ideal for novels, guides, journals and trade paperbacks.

02

PUR Binding

Polyurethane reactive adhesive provides superior strength to standard perfect binding. Recommended for coated paper, heavy-use publications, and books that need to lie flat. The strongest glued binding available.

Thread-Sewn

Using our Universe digital sheet-fed sewing machine, we can thread-sew paperback books from just 10 copies — the same binding used in hardbacks, delivering exceptional durability and longevity.

Custom paperback & softcover options

Custom paperback book printing,
your way.

Paperback book printing — also called softcover book printing, soft-cover book printing or simply paperback printing — covers any book bound into a flexible card cover rather than rigid boards. We do all of it in-house at our Exeter facility, from 10 copies up. Whether you call it paperback, softcover or soft cover, the construction is the same: full-colour cover printed onto 240–260gsm card, laminated with gloss, matt or soft-touch matt, then bound to the book block using one of three methods (perfect, PUR or thread-sewn).

Custom paperback book printing means you choose every spec — size, page count, paper, binding method, cover finish — and we make it. From 10 copies, no setup fees, no minimum order penalty.

For the technical detail, see our guides on PUR binding and thread-sewn binding, browse all book binding services, or compare formats in our hardback vs paperback guide.

Perfect bound, PUR bound or thread-sewn paperback?

Three binding methods for paperback book printing — each with different strengths:

  • Perfect bound book printing — the standard for trade paperbacks. Pages glued directly into the cover with EVA hot-melt adhesive. Cost-effective, fast, ideal for novels, manuals and most softcover work.
  • PUR bound book printing — uses Polyurethane Reactive adhesive instead of EVA. Stronger, more flexible bond. Recommended for coated paper, books that need to lie flat, and anything subject to heavy daily use. PUR bound book printing costs slightly more than perfect bound but is a real upgrade for the right project.
  • Thread-sewn paperback — pages physically sewn together with thread before being bound into a paperback cover. The strongest paperback binding available, used on premium fiction, art catalogues and reference paperbacks. We’re one of the few UK printers offering thread-sewn paperback at short-run quantities.

How to print a paperback book from PDF

Already have your interior and cover artwork ready? Print a paperback book from PDF in five steps:

  1. Use the instant quote calculator to configure your spec (size, page count, paper, binding method, quantity).
  2. Upload your interior PDF and cover PDF via our secure file checkers — we flag any issues before press.
  3. Approve the proof copy (dispatched within 2 working days, free of charge).
  4. We print, bind and finish your paperback at our Exeter facility — perfect bound or PUR bound depending on your spec.
  5. Books dispatched within 5–10 working days of approval (3–4 days on Fast Track for a 25% supplement).

For the cleanest result, your PDF should have 3mm bleed on all edges, all images at 300dpi, and CMYK colour throughout. If it doesn’t, our file check flags it before going to press — no surprises at the press stage.

Self-publish a paperback novel

Most of the paperback work we run is for self-published novels. Whether you want to self-publish a paperback as a debut release, print a small first run to send to reviewers and bookstores, or produce ISBN-barcoded retail copies for Amazon and indie stockists, the route is the same: configure your spec, upload your PDF, approve a proof, get books in 5–10 working days.

For a complete walkthrough of the self-publishing journey from manuscript to printed book, see our UK self-publishing guide — covers ISBN, legal deposit, distribution channels and printing economics in detail.

Paperback book printing for every use

Our UK paperback printing service runs across the full range of softcover work:

  • Trade paperback novels — B-format and A5 fiction at runs from 50 to 5,000+ copies. Most popular spec: 80gsm bookwove cream paper with matt-laminated cover.
  • Self-publishers — debut paperback editions of fiction, non-fiction, poetry. From 25 copies; pricing scales sharply with volume.
  • Catalogues & brochures — PUR-bound A4 colour paperbacks for product catalogues, gallery exhibition catalogues, sales collateral.
  • Manuals & reference — technical documentation, training manuals, instruction books. PUR or thread-sewn binding for heavy use.
  • Comics & graphic novels — full-colour paperback printing on coated paper, perfect or PUR bound depending on length.
  • Journals & planners — paperback notebooks with custom paper rulings (lined, dotted, grid, blank).
  • Academic & institutional — working drafts of theses, conference proceedings, departmental publications.

Whatever the project, the production specs are the same: in-house printing in Exeter, 5–10 working day turnaround, free physical proof, UK delivery included in the price.

Questions about
paperback book printing

Our minimum order is 10 paperback copies. We specialise in short runs so this applies across all three binding methods — perfect bound, PUR bound, and thread-sewn paperback.
For a 200-page A5 paperback in the UK, expect roughly £4.60 per copy at 50, £3.30 at 100, £2.50 at 250 and £2.27 at 500. Colour paperbacks on coated paper are higher (£8+ per copy). The pricing table on this page shows live numbers from our calculator.
Standard turnaround is 5 to 10 working days from artwork approval. Our Fast Track service delivers in 3 to 4 working days for a 25% supplement. Proof copies are dispatched within 2 working days.
Perfect binding uses EVA hot-melt adhesive — strong, cost-effective, and ideal for most paperbacks. PUR uses polyurethane reactive adhesive which bonds more strongly, lies flatter when open, and works better on coated paper. PUR costs slightly more but is recommended for books that will see heavy use.
Yes — we are one of the few UK printers to offer thread-sewn paperback binding from short runs. Pages are physically sewn before being glued into a paperback cover, producing the strongest paperback binding available. Ideal for art books, catalogues and reference works.
We offer five standard sizes — B-format (198×129mm), A5, Royal, B5 and A4 — plus custom sizes up to 320×320mm. If your book is a non-standard dimension, we can almost always accommodate it.
We offer 19 paper stocks ranging from 70gsm uncoated to 170gsm coated gloss. Common choices for paperbacks: 80gsm opaque (most novels), 80gsm bookwove cream (premium novels), 100gsm silk (illustrated paperbacks), 130gsm silk (photo-led books). Samples available on request.
Yes. Free sample packs are available on request. Email [email protected] with your address and we will send a range of paperback examples covering different binding types, paper weights, and cover finishes.
Standard paperback covers are 240gsm coated card with gloss, matt or soft-touch matt lamination. Optional finishes include foil blocking, spot UV varnish, embossing and debossing. Cover printing is full colour CMYK; we can also handle Pantone spot colours on special order.
Yes — typically 50-70% cheaper per copy at the same spec and quantity. A 200pp A5 perfect-bound paperback runs around £3.30/copy at 100; the same book as a thread-sewn case-bound hardback runs around £5.30/copy at 100. Paperback is the right choice for cost-sensitive trade and self-publishing work.
