What you're actually buying

Every order is a
dedicated print run.

Ten copies or a thousand, your books are made as one job on our own presses and bound on our own lines, to the specification a trade edition gets.

A dedicated short-run print job being bound at the Imprint Digital bindery in Exeter
Every order, every quantity

A dedicated run, made like a trade edition

Your books are printed as one dedicated job on our presses and bound on our own lines: the same paper, binding and finishing as a 5,000-copy trade run, whether you order 10 copies or 1,000. Every copy is identical, because every copy came off the same run.

  • 19 paper stocks, 5 binding methods, the full bookbindery finishing kit
  • Free digital proof: we don't print the run until you approve it
  • Per-copy price falls steeply with quantity: see the table below

If print-on-demand is the right answer, we will say so. For one-at-a-time retail fulfilment it is the correct tool, and our print-on-demand guide explains the trade-offs honestly. For copies you will sell, gift, launch or keep, a dedicated short run can give you a batch ready for your plans. Compare the specification, total cost and storage needs.

Types of book binding

Five binding methods,
all under one roof.

Every binding type below is produced in-house. Pick the one that fits your project, or call us if you're unsure and we'll talk you through which method gives you the look, durability and price-point you're after.

We print and bind at our Exeter book bindery, with options for paperback and hardback editions. Choose a specification that suits the reader and compare quantities in our calculator. If you need single-copy retail fulfilment, our print on demand guide explains the different ordering models. More on our book binding services →

Choosing book paper

Which paper for
which book?

We stock 19 options, but four carry the overwhelming majority of everything that goes through our presses. Shown edge to edge, because butted together is the only way to judge a shade.

Enso

70gsm

It was a smaller book than she remembered, and a heavier one.

Cream · uncoated

Stora Enso Creamy

Long novels and high page counts. The same 140µm caliper as our 80gsm Bookwove, so just as thick but lighter to hold.

92% opacity · ISO brightness 73

Bookwove

80gsm cream

It was a smaller book than she remembered, and a heavier one.

Cream · uncoated

Munken Premium 17.5

The classic novel paper, and our most-used stock. Easier on the eye over a long read, which is why most UK fiction uses it.

88% opacity · ISO brightness 83

Bookwove

80gsm white

It was a smaller book than she remembered, and a heavier one.

White · uncoated

Munken Premium 17.5

The same sheet in white. Suits non-fiction, diagrams and anything with line art in it.

89% opacity · ISO brightness 96

Opaque

80 to 100gsm

It was a smaller book than she remembered, and a heavier one.

White · uncoated

Soporset Offset

Manuals, reports and workbooks. Helps reduce text showing through from the reverse of the sheet.

94 to 96% opacity · the most opaque we stock

Coated stock sits outside this range. For photography, art and cookery we run UPM Finesse Silk at 115 to 130gsm, a permanent paper to ISO 9706 that holds fine detail without it soaking in. Paper also changes your spine width (check yours with the spine width calculator). Order the free sample pack to feel all of them, read our guide to paper types, or follow your paper's journey from certified European forest to our Exeter bindery.

Book printing FAQs

Most-asked
questions.

The most common questions we get on book printing in the UK, including what it really costs. For the full set of 73 questions across design, printing, quotes and shipping, see our FAQ page.

What is short-run book printing?

Short-run book printing means producing small quantities, typically 10 to 500 copies, digitally, without the setup costs of a traditional offset run. It is the standard route for self-publishing authors, test editions and academic monographs. For the full picture, how it differs from print on demand, pricing behaviour at low quantities, and the questions to ask any printer, see our dedicated short-run book printing guide.

What is the minimum order for book printing?

Ten copies for a paperback, twenty-five for a hardback. There is no upper limit: we routinely print runs from 10 up to 10,000 copies, and per-copy pricing falls as quantity rises.

Where can I print my own book in the UK?

We print and bind books at our Exeter works, from 10 paperbacks or 25 hardbacks. Choose the paper, binding and finish in the calculator, upload your print-ready files and approve a proof before production. Delivery is priced at checkout. Compare quotes for the same specification and ask each supplier about proofing, production times and delivery.

What file format do I need to supply?

Press-ready PDF, ideally CMYK at 300dpi. If you only have a Word document we can convert it to PDF for you and send it back for approval before printing, no charge for this.

How long does printing take?

Standard production takes 5 to 7 working days for paperbacks and 3 to 4 weeks for hardbacks, from proof approval. Delivery is additional. If you have a deadline, tell us before ordering so we can confirm what is achievable.

Do you print eco-friendly?

Yes. We use responsibly sourced papers, and most of our work is printed on uncoated bookwove or opaque stocks rather than energy-intensive coated papers. Books are dispatched in cardboard rather than plastic packaging.

How much does it cost to print a book in the UK?

Cost depends on quantity, page count, paper, format, binding and finish. As a live guide from our calculator: a 200-page A5 paperback in 80gsm uncoated works out at £3.83 per copy at 50 copies, falling to £2.05 at 250 and £1.63 at 1,000. A 200-page A5 hardback (case-bound, thread-sewn, printed paper case) is £8.48 per copy at 50 copies, £4.63 at 250 and £3.10 at 1,000. All prices include a free digital proof; UK delivery is calculated at checkout. For your exact spec see our quote calculator or full UK book printing prices page.

What is the best book printing company in the UK?

Choose a printer around the quantity, specification, proof options, deadline and budget. Compare samples and current quotes, including delivery and any other charges. Our short-run printing guide lists questions to help you make a like-for-like comparison.

Can I print just one book?

Not as an order. Our minimum is 10 copies (25 for hardbacks), because every run is set up and made as one job, and a single copy would cost you most of what ten do. If you need one copy of a book, a print-on-demand service is the right tool and we will say so. If you want to hold your book before the run, add a printed proof copy to your order; the digital proof is free on every order.

Do I need an ISBN to print a book?

No, an ISBN is only required if you are listing your book for retail sale (Amazon, Waterstones, Blackwell's, libraries). For private editions, family histories, corporate reports, internal academic editions, gift editions and any non-retail use, no ISBN is needed. We can print, bind and dispatch your book whether or not it has one. If you are self-publishing for retail, you will need an ISBN per format (one for paperback, a separate one for hardback), ISBNs are issued by Nielsen UK.

Is there VAT on printed books?

No, printed books are zero-rated for VAT in the UK, so no VAT is added to a finished book run. The main exception is products designed to be written in (notebooks, journals, diaries and planners), which carry standard-rate VAT at 20%. If your project is borderline, a workbook with answer spaces, for example, we will confirm the VAT treatment at quote stage.

What is the cheapest way to print a book?

Five levers bring book printing cost down, in rough order of impact: (1) print mono rather than colour, colour pages cost several times more; (2) choose a smaller trim size such as A5 or B-format; (3) use a standard 80gsm uncoated stock rather than heavy coated paper; (4) choose perfect-bound paperback rather than hardback; and (5) order at a quantity break: per-copy price falls steeply between 10 and 250 copies. Above roughly 1,000 copies, offset litho becomes competitive with digital: we will tell you when your quantity crosses that line.

Can you print a book from a PDF?

Yes, a press-ready PDF is exactly what we print from. Upload your interior and cover PDFs, configure size, paper, binding and quantity in the quote calculator, and we take it from there: preflight checks, a free digital proof, then the run. If you only have a Word document, we convert it to a print-ready PDF for you at no charge and send it back for approval before anything is printed.

How much does it cost to print a 500-page book?

A 500-page book is routine work for us: we print and bind paperbacks and hardbacks up to around 1,000 pages, where many online printing services cap out at 300 to 500 pages. As a live guide from our calculator: a 500-page A5 paperback (mono, 80gsm opaque, perfect bound) is £5.78 per copy at 50 copies and £4.21 at 250 copies; the same book as a case-bound, thread-sewn hardback is £12.31 per copy at 50 and £7.29 at 250. Thick books are exactly where thread-sewn binding earns its keep: the thread carries the weight of the block rather than a line of glue, and a lighter paper stock keeps the spine width practical. We advise on both at quote stage. All prices include a free digital proof; UK delivery is calculated at checkout.
