PUR binding is a method of book binding using PolyUrethane Reactive (PUR) glue — the strongest adhesive used in bookbinding. The process is the same as conventional perfect binding: the book block is gathered, the spine prepared, a thin film of adhesive applied, and the cover drawn on before the book is trimmed on three sides. The difference is entirely in the glue — and the difference is enormous.
If your book is too thick for stapling and you want the traditional paperback format, PUR produces a solid, professional book that’s easy to read and annotate — and it’s remarkably cost-effective, even at low quantities.
What makes PUR different?
Standard perfect binding uses EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) hot-melt glue, which simply cools and sets. PUR cures differently: it cross-links through a chemical reaction with moisture in the paper and the surrounding air, bonding into the fibres of the stock itself rather than sitting on the surface.
That chemistry gives a PUR-bound book a far greater pull and flex strength — in industry pull tests, PUR typically holds pages dramatically harder than EVA — and it keeps that strength in conditions that defeat ordinary hot-melt: hot cars, cold warehouses, humid kitchens. Pulling a page out of a well-made PUR book is close to impossible.
PUR binding vs perfect binding
Strictly, PUR binding is perfect binding — the same method with a better adhesive. When printers say “perfect bound” without qualification, they usually mean EVA. What the glue swap actually changes:

EVA still has a place — high-volume magazines and short-lived documents don’t need PUR’s strength. But for a book someone pays for and keeps, the stronger glue is cheap insurance.
Does PUR binding lay flat?
Honest answer: flatter than any other glued binding, but not truly flat. PUR’s flexible spine lets a book open generously without cracking — but every glued spine still pulls the pages back toward closed. If your book genuinely needs to lie flat — cookbooks used hands-free, music on a stand, art books with images crossing the spine — the step up is thread sewn binding, where stitched sections let the book fall open completely.

The binding ladder: perfect, PUR, thread sewn
Think of paperback binding as three rungs:
- Perfect (EVA) — the economy rung. Fine for light-use documents and short-lived publications.
- PUR — the workhorse. The right choice for most books: novels, memoirs, catalogues, manuals and anything on coated stock. This is our standard adhesive binding.
- Thread sewn — the heirloom rung. Stitched sections for books that must lie flat, take decades of use, or carry sentimental weight. Standard on every case-bound hardback we make, optional on paperbacks.
Unusually for a printer, we offer all three in-house — so you’ll get a straight answer about which rung your book actually needs, not just the one we happen to sell.
Which papers need PUR?
Some stocks make PUR essential rather than optional. Coated papers (gloss and silk) and heavyweight uncoated stocks resist EVA — the glue sits on the coating instead of gripping the fibres. We bind these with PUR as standard, at the price quoted in our pricing calculator — no surprise surcharges.
A typical example: a full-colour children’s book printed on 150gsm coated paper will always be PUR bound with us, because that’s what makes the binding last as long as the book.
One cover tip: if your design carries heavy ink coverage, particularly around the edges, have the cover laminated. It protects against wear from handling and keeps the book looking new.

PUR for short runs
PUR used to be a long-run luxury — the glue systems suited big bindery lines, so small quantities got EVA by default. Digital changed that: our paperback runs start at just 10 copies, every one of them bound with the same adhesive and the same care as a run of a thousand.
