Self-publishing
book printing.

We're not a self-publishing service — we're a UK book printer and bookbinder who works with hundreds of self-publishing authors every year. You bring the manuscript and the cover. We print and bind it. From 10 copies, no setup fees, free physical proof. You keep the rights, the ISBN, and the royalties.

If you're self-publishing a book in the UK, you're navigating a landscape of services: editing, design, ISBN, distribution, retail, marketing — and printing. We do the printing. Just the printing. We're a real UK bookbindery, with a sewing machine, a case-binding line, foil-blocking presses and 19 paper stocks held on-site.

For self-publishing authors, that focus is a feature, not a limitation. You get printer-grade attention to the part of self-publishing that touches paper. You keep the rights, the ISBN, the royalties and your relationship with readers. We print, bind and dispatch your book to your spec — short-run book printing from 10 copies upward, no minimums beyond that.

The honest split

What you do,
what we do.

Self-publishing means you're in charge. We're one part of the operation — here's exactly which part.

What you do

The author / publisher side

  • Write & edit your manuscript (or hire an editor)
  • Design the cover & interior layout (or hire a designer)
  • Buy an ISBN if you're selling retail (Nielsen UK)
  • Choose your spec — size, paper, binding, finish
  • Decide how many copies to print and to whom you'll sell them
  • Plan your marketing, distribution and pricing
  • Keep all the rights and all the royalties
What we do

The printer / bookbinder side

  • Free file check on every order — flag any bleed, resolution or colour issues before press
  • Print interior pages and cover on Canon & Ricoh digital presses
  • Thread-sew or perfect/PUR bind to your chosen binding
  • Apply finishing — lamination, foil blocking, embossing, dust jackets if specified
  • Dispatch a free physical proof copy within 2 working days
  • Print the full run after you sign off the proof
  • Pack and ship via UK tracked courier

Honest comparison

Imprint vs full
self-publishing platforms.

Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Lulu and BookBaby are full self-publishing platforms with retail integration. We're a focused book printer. Different tools for different jobs — and many self-publishing authors use both.

Factor Self-publishing platforms (KDP, IngramSpark, Lulu) Imprint Digital
Service scope Print, retail integration, distribution, marketing tools, ISBN options bundled. Print and bind only. Tighter scope, deeper expertise on the printing.
Per-copy cost Higher per-copy (POD economics) — £8–£15 for a typical paperback regardless of quantity. Short-run economics — ~£6 at 10 copies, ~£3 at 250 copies. Scales with quantity.
Print quality & options Standard paper, perfect-bound, limited cover finishing. Generic. 19 paper stocks, thread-sewn binding, foil blocking, hardback construction, dust jackets, premium cover materials.
Royalties / rights You keep rights, but platform takes a cut of each sale (typically 30–60%). You buy the books outright at print cost. 100% of any onward sale revenue is yours.
Retail integration Direct integration with Amazon, IngramSpark distribution, sometimes Apple/Google. None — we print, you sell. You handle Amazon listings, direct sales, events, bookshops yourself.
Best paired with Authors selling primarily through Amazon retail with no inventory. Authors who sell direct, at events, to bookshops, or want premium-quality print.

Many self-publishing authors use both: KDP for Amazon-driven sales, us for the books they sell direct, sign at events, send to bookshops and gift to family. More on print on demand vs short-run book printing →

Why self-publishers choose us

A real UK printer
who happens to print books.

We started life in the late 1990s as the in-house printing arm of Imprint Academic, a UK academic publisher. Self-publishing authors found us in the early 2000s and never left. We now print hundreds of self-published books every month — debut paperbacks at 50 copies through to indie-publisher runs of 5,000+.

Every book is made at our Exeter facility. Universe digital sheet-fed sewing machine for thread-sewn binding from 10 copies. Digibook case-binding line for hardback construction. Foil-blocking presses, dust-jacket fitting, 19 paper stocks held in-stock, in-house binding for every order. Visit by appointment — the person who shows you round is the person who'll bind your book.

Self-publishing FAQs

Questions about
self-publishing book printing.

No — we are a book printer and bookbinder. We print and bind books for self-publishing authors, but we don't do editing, design, distribution or marketing. You bring a press-ready PDF (or a Word file we will convert), we print it. You keep the rights, the ISBN, the royalties and the relationship with your readers. For full self-publishing platforms with retail integration, look at Amazon KDP, IngramSpark or Lulu.
For a typical 300-page A5 paperback debut novel, expect roughly £6 per copy at 50 copies, £4 at 100 copies and £2.80 at 250. Hardback gift editions of the same book run £8–£15 per copy at 50–250 copies. All prices include UK delivery and a free physical proof. The pricing table on this page shows live numbers from our calculator.
No. An ISBN is only required if you're selling for retail (Amazon, Waterstones, libraries, bookshops). For private editions, signed copies sold direct, family histories, gift editions and any non-retail use, no ISBN is needed. We can print, bind and dispatch your book whether or not it has one. If you do need ISBNs, they're issued by Nielsen UK.
Ten copies. Most self-publishing authors order 50–250 copies for a launch — enough for events, review copies, bookshop consignments and gifting, with per-copy economics that work. Pricing scales smoothly so 50 is genuinely 50, not "minimum 100".
We don't do cover design in-house, but we work regularly with UK book designers and can introduce you to one if you don't have one. Or, if you've designed your own cover in Canva, InDesign or Photoshop, we'll check the file is press-ready before printing — free file check on every order. We'll also flag bleed, resolution or colour issues before it goes to press.
Standard turnaround is 5–10 working days for paperback, 3–4 weeks for hardback, from the point we receive your approved files. Fast Track is available on most jobs for a 25% supplement and brings paperbacks to 3 days, hardbacks to 2 weeks. A free physical proof copy is dispatched within 2 working days of file approval.
Different jobs. Amazon KDP gives you single-copy retail fulfilment via Amazon — ideal if your readers buy via Amazon. We give you better-quality print, thread-sewn binding, premium options (hardback, foil, dust jackets), and substantially lower per-copy cost above one copy. Many authors use both: KDP for Amazon-driven sales, us for the books they sell direct, sign at events, send to bookshops, and gift to family.
Debut novels (paperback at 50–250), poetry pamphlets (saddle-stitched at 50–100), genre fiction (sci-fi, fantasy, romance, thriller, often in series), memoir and family histories (paperback or hardback at 25–100), academic monographs (hardback at 50–100), photo books (hardback case-bound), children's books (paperback or hardback at 100–500), cookbooks, and limited editions (premium hardback runs of 50–200).
