    YOUR COVER, MADE BY YOU

Design your own book cover online.

Cover Builder is Imprint Digital's free book cover maker for paperbacks and hardback PPC (printed paper case). Start with an editable design, add your title and artwork, then bring the front, back and spine together on one canvas.

Your book size, page count and chosen paper set the cover measurements. Save your work in your account, preview it as a 3D book, and prepare a cover print file for printing with Imprint.

    FOUR STEPS TO YOUR COVER

How to use the book cover maker.

    1. Choose a template

Open Design and pick a starting layout. Try a quiet style for poetry, a bold title for a thriller or an image-led memoir cover. The text, colours and individual elements can all be edited.

    2. Add your book details

In Book details, enter your title, author and back-cover blurb. Choose a standard book size or enter your own dimensions, then select the interior paper and page count. The builder calculates the spine width for you.

    3. Make the artwork yours

Use Artwork to add text, images and shapes. Drag elements into place, adjust their size and arrange layers. Choose a panel to work on the front, back or spine, or use Whole cover to see the complete design.

    4. Preview and save

Check the flat cover and 3D preview, review any layout warnings, then save your book and print file. When you are ready, Price this book carries your saved cover and book specification into a print quote.

    Editable templates, fonts and layers.

A template gives you a starting point for the layout. Change the words, choose fonts, adjust the colours and move individual elements to suit your story. Lock a layer when you want to keep it in place, or hide it while trying another idea.

For a clear title, start with one or two fonts and a background that gives the lettering enough contrast. Check the back-cover blurb as carefully as the front. Our book cover design guide explains the principles in more detail.

Create AI artwork for your cover.

Describe the image you have in mind: its subject, setting, mood and colours. The Improve prompt button can turn a simple idea into a more detailed image brief. Leave space for the title and generate the artwork without lettering, then add your words as editable text.

Artwork is sized for the selected panel and book dimensions, within the generator's supported limits. Sign in to use AI artwork; daily usage limits apply. Generated images and uploads are kept in My images so you can return to them.

    MADE TO FIT YOUR BOOK

The front, the back, and the right spine.

Paperbacks and printed paper hardback cases need a complete cover spread. The spine connects the front and back, and its width depends on the number of interior pages and the thickness of the paper you select.

Cover Builder uses our paper catalogue and binding measurements to size that spread. If the final page count or paper changes, update Book details and review the layout again. Keep essential text inside the safe guides and extend edge-to-edge artwork through the bleed area. Hardback PPC includes 20 mm turn-ins and 11 mm hinges, using the same measurements as our cover template generator. Keep important words on the visible boards and away from the hinges.

Compare book sizes, check a measurement with the spine calculator, or explore our paperback printing options.

A LITTLE HELP ALONG THE WAY

    Book cover maker questions.

Planning the inside pages too? Visit Design your book for the wider process and our guides to book layout.

Is the book cover maker free?

Yes. You can use the editor, cover templates, fonts and layout tools without paying to design your cover. Sign in for image uploads, AI artwork and saving to your account. AI artwork has daily usage limits. Printing your finished book is quoted separately.

What size should my book cover be?

Enter the finished size of one page in Book details, rather than the width of the whole cover. Select the interior paper and total page count, excluding the cover. The builder adds the back panel, spine and bleed to calculate the complete cover spread. Use the final specification before saving a print file.

Can I design the back cover and spine too?

Yes. Work on the complete spread or switch to Front, Back or Spine. Each panel can have its own colours, images and text. Keep the back-cover blurb readable and check that spine lettering fits inside the guides. Very narrow spines may be better without text.

Which images can I upload, and what resolution do I need?

Upload JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 10 MB each after signing in. Aim for 300 pixels per inch at the size the image will appear in print. Enlarging a small image reduces its effective resolution. The image controls show its current ppi, and the preview flags images below 300 ppi.

Can I generate AI artwork without text?

Yes, that is how the artwork feature is intended to work. Describe the illustration or scene, choose the panel and leave space for lettering. Use Improve prompt if you want help describing the composition. Add the book title and author in the editor afterwards so you can change the wording, font and position.

Where are my cover and print file saved?

When you are signed in, your editable cover saves automatically to your account after you make changes. Save book saves immediately. Use Open to return to My bookshelf and continue working. A browser recovery copy is also kept as you work, including when you are signed out; that copy is only available in the same browser. Save print file in Preview keeps a PDF with the saved book for our team. Review and save a new print file after changing your design.

Can I add an ISBN barcode?

Yes. Open Author biography & ISBN in Book details, enter the ISBN already allocated to your book and choose Add barcode to back cover. Keep it inside the safe area and clear of other artwork. The builder creates the barcode from your number; it does not allocate an ISBN.

Which cover options are coming soon?

Inside cover artwork, gatefold covers and dust jackets are planned for this editor. Their tabs are disabled until they are ready. Inside cover means the reverse of the cover, not the book's text pages. Interior typesetting is a separate tool coming to Design your book. For now, our cover template generator can help you prepare other supported cover formats in your own design software.
