How much does hardback book printing cost?

The table shows the same A5 hardback — 200 pages mono, printed paper case — at six quantities, thread-sewn (our standard, and what the calculator opens on) and glued (the same book with an unsewn block), priced live by our calculator, so you can see exactly how the per-copy price falls as the run grows.

The steepest savings come between 10 and 100 copies as binding make-ready spreads across more books. Beyond 250 the curve flattens — don’t over-order to chase a discount. Colour photo books on coated paper cost more. See full UK book printing prices or get your exact price →

It was my first time printing books with Imprint, and I had a really good experience. The books came out just as I expected, and they were packed really carefully for delivery. Happy with the service and the quality!

I would give 10 stars if I could. This was my first foray into preparing a book myself for self publishing. In the past we have paid a designer a vast amount which wasn’t a cost effective option for this project. Riley at Imprint was endlessly helpful and patient and we have ended up with a very professional product at an incredibly reasonable price. What is even more outstanding is that I approved the final PDF on Wednesday and received the books on Friday!

I'm delighted with the whole printing experience with ImprintDigital. In a book with many colour photos and detailed technical illustrations, the printing quality is absolutely superb, with bright, true colours, sharp details and a high-quality glossy texture. The ordering process was simple and email responses were fast, friendly and professional..A delivery issue caused by another company was handled swiftly and elegantly. I highly recommend ImprintDigital.

Questions

Hardback printing FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for a hardback? Our minimum order is 10 hardback copies. Unlike most UK book printers, we use a digital sheet-fed sewing machine so short runs are genuinely short — you are not pushed toward a minimum of 100 or 250.
How much does it cost to print a hardback book? For a 200-page A5 mono hardback in the UK, expect roughly £10.70 per copy at 50, £8.78 at 100 and £4.63 at 250, thread-sewn with a printed paper case. The same book with a glued case-bound block, the budget hardback, is £20.50 at 10 copies and £6.99 at 100. Colour photo books on coated paper are higher. The pricing table on this page shows live numbers from our calculator.
How much does it cost to print a 300 page hardback book?A 300-page A5 mono hardback, thread-sewn with a printed paper case, is about £12.39 per copy at 50 copies, £10.58 at 100 and £5.95 at 250, priced live by the calculator on this page. The extra hundred pages add paper and sewing time over the 200-page book in the table; a glued case-bound block costs less, and colour pages or coated paper cost more. Set the page count to 300 above and the price updates for your exact spec.
How long does a hardback print run take?Standard turnaround is 10 to 12 working days from artwork approval. Our Fast Track service delivers in 7 working days for a 25% supplement. Proof copies are dispatched within 2 working days of your files being received.
Can I see a sample before committing?Yes. We dispatch free sample books to most UK addresses. Email [email protected] with your name and address and we will send a range of hardback examples covering different binding, paper and cover finish options.
What cover materials are available?Printed paper case (PPC) with gloss, matt or soft-touch matt lamination is the standard. We also offer Wibalin and buckram cloths in 30+ colours, leather and vegan-leather alternatives. Foil blocking, embossing and debossing are applied directly onto any of these.
How durable is a thread-sewn hardback?A thread-sewn case-bound hardback is the most durable book binding available. Pages are physically sewn together with thread and bound into rigid boards — the same construction used on Penguin Modern Classics and on archival reference works. Built to last decades of regular use.
Can you print a hardback with 500 or more pages?Yes — we bind hardbacks up to around 1,000 pages depending on paper weight. Many online printing services cap hardbacks at 400–600 pages; thread-sewn binding is what makes genuinely thick books practical, because the thread carries the weight of the block rather than a line of glue.
Is there VAT on hardback book printing? No — printed books are zero-rated for VAT in the UK, so no VAT is added to a finished hardback book run. The main exception is products designed to be written in (notebooks, journals, diaries and planners), which carry standard-rate VAT.
Where can I print hardback books in the UK?Here, at our own bindery in Exeter, Devon. Imprint Digital prints and binds hardbacks in-house from 10 copies: the book block is thread-sewn on our Universe sewing machine, cased into rigid boards on our Digibook line, foil blocked and finished on site, then dispatched by tracked courier anywhere in the UK. Many online book printers send hardbacks out to a third-party bindery; ours never leave the building, which is why every order gets a free digital proof and you can ask for a free sample pack before you commit.
How do you print your own hardback book?Prepare a single-page PDF of the interior with 3mm bleed, 300dpi images and CMYK colour, and a cover PDF from our free cover template generator, which builds the spread to your exact trim size, page count and paper. Choose the size, paper, page counts, cover material and binding in the calculator on this page, set your quantity from 10 copies, and add it to your cart. Upload the files, approve the free digital proof, and we print, sew, case and dispatch within 10 to 12 working days. Not sure about file setup? The free pre-flight check flags bleed, resolution and colour problems before anything reaches press.
