03Production challenge

Seven printings of one title in under eighteen months, at quantities from 120 to 1,200 copies. Each printing has to match the last: the same paper, the same sewing, the same flaps and the same finish.

04Production route

Text printed on our mono presses. The printed sheets folded into sections and sewn through the fold on our Meccanotecnica Universe. Covers printed and matt laminated in the same works, with French flaps, and the sewn blocks bound into them.

05Materials

80gsm Munken Premium Cream 17.5: an uncoated cream book paper with good bulk and a natural feel in the hand. We hold it at the works and at our paper merchant.

06Binding construction

Thread-sewn: each folded section sewn through its fold, then the sewn block bound into the cover. Sewing helps a book open more easily and hold its pages under repeated use, though no paperback construction is completely lay-flat.

07Finishing

French flaps on a matt laminated cover.

08Delivery

1,214 copies despatched, as counted on our despatch records.

09Result

Across seven printings the title has run to 5,020 copies: 120, 400, 500, 1,000, 1,000, 1,200 and 800, every one on the same specification.

The seventh, 800 copies in June 2026, was released on Thursday 11 June, its text printed on our varioPRINT 6270 through to the Saturday, bound on Thursday 18 and despatched on Friday 19 June: six working days.

10What we would do again

Hold the specification and let the quantity move. At 120 copies or 1,200 it is the same book.

11Related production capability

In the twelve months to 28 September 2026 we made 374 thread-sewn runs: 60,469 sewn books despatched.

Released is the day a job entered the print queue after approval. Copies despatched are as counted on our despatch records, which include the overs and unders our terms allow. Photographs show general production at our works, not the job described.
