03Production challenge

A hardback has more stages than a paperback: the book is sewn, the cases are made, the blocks are cased in and then jacketed. Our standard time for hardbacks is 3 to 4 weeks from proof approval, and it still is; this run shows what the route can do when the schedule allows.

04Production route

Text printed on our own presses, the four colour pages alongside the mono. Sections thread-sewn on the Meccanotecnica Universe. Cases made and the blocks cased in on our Kolbus line, the route for runs of 150 copies and more. Jackets printed in the same works.

05Materials

120gsm Bookwove White for the text. Wibalin cloth over our standard 2,750 micron board.

06Binding construction

Thread-sewn and cased with a flat back: the sewn block glued into a rigid case with a square spine.

07Finishing

A printed dust jacket over the cloth case: 1,200 jackets printed for 1,000 books.

08Delivery

Despatched on Friday 27 February 2026: 1,010 copies, as counted on our despatch records.

09Result

Released on Tuesday 17 February, bound on Thursday 26, despatched on Friday 27 February: eight working days for 1,000 sewn cloth hardbacks.

10What we would do again

Print the jackets over quantity, so jacketing never waits on a second run of jackets.

11Related production capability

In the twelve months to 28 September 2026 we made 184 sewn hardback runs.

Released is the day a job entered the print queue after approval. Copies despatched are as counted on our despatch records, which include the overs and unders our terms allow. Photographs show general production at our works, not the job described.
